Choose a free-shipping threshold your margins can support
Work through shipping cost, contribution margin and checkout testing before adding a free-shipping progress bar to your Shopify store.
Work backward from contribution margin
Start with the money left after product cost and variable order costs. A higher cart total is not automatically a better order if the extra margin is smaller than the shipping you absorb.
For an illustrative order with a 40% contribution margin before shipping and an $8 shipping cost, $20 of additional merchandise contributes $8 before other changes. This is an example, not a recommended threshold: use your own product mix, returns, discounts and shipping costs.
Check the cases a progress bar cannot know
Test expensive destinations, heavy products, remote-area charges, discount codes and mixed carts. A message about remaining spend should match what a shopper will actually see at checkout.
Meter displays progress and creates a matching Shopify shipping discount. Destination eligibility is checked at checkout, and the current rule applies across destinations. It does not convert currencies or choose different thresholds by destination. The initial release is for USD stores.
Test below, at and above the threshold
For an illustrative $75 threshold, check a $74 cart, a $75 cart and a larger cart. Change quantities, remove items and apply your normal discounts. Inspect the shipping rate in checkout for the destinations you serve.
If checkout and the message differ, fix the underlying shipping or discount setup before publishing. Pause Meter to remove its active shipping discount when ending the promotion.
Compare margin and customer friction
Review shipping cost per order, contribution margin, checkout completion and shipping-related support questions. Separate seasonal or traffic changes from the promotion; a before-and-after comparison alone cannot prove the bar caused a change.
Meter has a Free plan and a $5 USD per 30 days Growth plan without percentage or per-order fees. It is available on the Shopify App Store. Its app page lists plan allowances, setup and release status.
